AD RescueWear | Wet-Wrap Therapy

What is Wet-Wrap Therapy? How is it done?

Wet–wrap therapy is a method of hydrating and moisturizing the abnormally dry skin present in eczema (also known as atopic dermatitis). By keeping the skin in contact with water through much of the night, it reduces redness and itching, decreases inflammation and allows for better sleep. However, this treatment has traditionally involved wrapping the child in gauze, which is time-consuming, messy, and, over time, expensive.

AD RescueWear body suits, tops, bottoms, and sleeves allow the application of wet-wrap therapy using specially designed garments that greatly decrease the time needed to apply the wet layer. Wrap-E-Sooth garments from AD RescueWear are made of Tencel® fabric, which is softer and which holds more water than cotton. The fabric is non-irritating, and the garments are designed without interior zippers, raised seams, or labels, to further prevent skin irritation. They are washable and repeatedly re-usable.

The easy steps involved in wet-wrap therapy are shown in the following graphic:

  1. Soak the Wrap-E-Sooth garment in warm water.
  2. Bath the child in lukewarm water for about 10-15 minutes, to deeply hydrate (wet) the skin.
  3. Remove excess water from the skin by patting the skin lightly with a towel.
  4. Apply Vaniply ointment or a similar product, to help seal the water into the skin.
  5. Wring out excess water from the Wrap-E-Soothe garment, and put it on the child.
  6. Apply a dry layer of pajamas or clothing above the Wrap-E-Soothe garment, and keep in place overnight.

IMPORTANT: Use Wet-Wrap Therapy intermittently, for flare-ups of eczema. It should not be used continuously.
