1. Keep the pet out of the patient's bedroom at all times,
even when the patient is not there. This helps prevent dander buildup.
2. Encase the pillow, mattress and box spring in allergen-proof
covers. This will prevent previously accumulated dander from becoming airborne and
being inhaled. (Note that not all barrier encasings sold today will protect you from
animal allergen. Many microfiber barrier fabrics have pore sizes small enough to block
dust mite allergen but not small enough to block the tiny dander allergen particles. Be
sure to verify that the encasing blocks dander as well as mite allergens before purchasing.)
3. Wash all bedding including blankets repeatedly in hot water, or replace.
4. Remove the bedroom carpet, if possible (especially if there is also a
dust mite allergy).
